Full vs partial FAI

Full vs partial FAI under AS9102 Rev C

A partial FAI is not a shortcut. It is a scoped re-accomplishment tied to a baseline FAIR and the characteristics affected by the trigger.

Decision flow

  1. Start with the trigger: new part, design change, process change, source/location change, inspection-method change, corrective action, or lapse in production.
  2. If there is no approved baseline FAIR or the production process must be re-established, plan a full FAI unless the customer explicitly accepts a narrower path.
  3. If the baseline FAIR remains valid, identify exactly which characteristics are affected and scope the partial FAI to those rows plus any linked evidence.
  4. Record the baseline and the reason in Form 1 Field 14. Under Rev C, Field 14 is used for both full and partial FAI reasoning.
  5. If the customer portal or purchase order is stricter than your internal procedure, follow the customer requirement.

Field 14 wording examples

Scenario FAI type Field 14 wording
New part number with no approved baseline Full Full FAI for new part number FM-2401 Rev A; no previous approved FAIR.
Drawing revision changes one hole pattern Partial Partial FAI against FAIR FA-2300 Rev B; covers ECN-117 hole-pattern change and affected Form 3 rows.
Production lapse reaches the AS9102 trigger Usually full Full FAI after 2-year production lapse; customer approval required for any partial-scope rationale.
Inspection method changes for one characteristic Partial Partial FAI for changed inspection method on Form 3 characteristic 42; baseline FAIR FA-2300 remains valid for unchanged rows.

The 2-year lapse rule

Public AS9102 training and FAQ material consistently treats a two-year production lapse as a trigger for re-accomplishing FAI. The practical rule is conservative: if production has been dormant long enough that process control must be re-established, expect a full FAI unless the customer accepts a documented partial rationale.

Frequently asked questions

Is a partial FAI allowed under AS9102 Rev C?

Yes, when the scope is tied to an approved baseline and the partial FAI covers the affected characteristics and evidence. The customer or purchase order can still require a full FAI.

What changed for Field 14 in Rev C?

Public Rev C form instructions describe Field 14 as Full FAI / Partial FAI and ask for the reason for either path, not only the reason for a partial FAI.
